Milners key examples

Genuine and good copy keys for Milners safe doors should have a distinctive part on the bow end of the bit. This piece engages with the curtain of the thrower. Shown below on the key stamped 1 and the two keys on a lock. Might help if you are searching through key bunches for a safe key.

I have a milner safe lock the same as your picture that locks fine but difficult to unlock, do you have replacement locks ?

    • Alan Morgan on December 22, 2022 at 12:06 pm

we have a box of milners locks, however they are all very slightly different. Better to get your lock serviced and new keys made.

good locksmiths should be able to duplicate from a working key while you wait. all keys missing would require a visit to gain entry

Hi would you be able to tell the age of a milners 212 safe? Key has been lost. What lock type is it?

    • Alan Morgan on March 8, 2024 at 8:53 pm

We can date most Milners by the serial number. Usually stamped above the door, often painted over. Can be several sets of stamping.
Keys cannot be generated to code. The safe would need professional opening and taken apart to make keys by hand.

There are some stamped numbers on the top edge. Looks like D748 in the center and 250 in the right corner.

    • Alan Morgan on March 9, 2024 at 6:53 pm

Probably made first quarter of 1892

Hi, I’m trying to date my safe and can’t find any information on how to do it! It’s a Milner safe and I have the following codes stamped in the top corner, do you think you can date off this? 7931 V4904.

    • Alan Morgan on October 14, 2024 at 8:50 pm

      Most likely manufactured in 1910

Hello, We recently purchased a property (Old Bank) for a home in NSW Australia.
It has a Milners Safe in the Vault room (Chubb room). Its is a 2 door safe. Can send photos. Number on Left hinge ’97’ Number above Right Hand door ‘131178’. We know the Building was built as a Pub, but opened as the ‘Bank Of New South Wales’ Australia. Building was built in 1873 to be a Pub, but changed to bank we think a couple of years later. Can you provide some sort of manufactured date for the Safe. Thanks. Also no keys, it has been opened.

    • Alan Morgan on December 24, 2024 at 10:06 pm

      Hello
that serial number does equate to 1873 from UK records.
The 97 is likely a weight size reference
You can find a safe engineer through the MLAA if required to reinstate the safe or strong room

Hi I have a 212 patent Milner safe, it’s huge. The serial number is 179242 do you know what year this was made?
We’ve no keys but any idea on value?
    Thanks

    • Alan Morgan on July 2, 2025 at 2:07 pm

Your serial number equates to the year 1881
Value only really if immaculate with original keys. Usually would be charged to remove a heavy safe

Great to have come across this site. I have a Milner’s wall safe with original keys. I can’t see a serial number on/in the safe but the there’s a metal ID tag with the keys, number 285589, and the key number is C6634. Is it possible to trace who bought the safe or anything about its provenance, as well as it’s age? Thanks!

    • Alan Morgan on August 13, 2025 at 9:07 pm

      Potentially from 1891

Please can you help with aging my milners safe.
    Serial no: J4501 1560
Also, could you please advise on best places to sell if required
    Thank you

    • Alan Morgan on August 13, 2025 at 9:09 pm

      From 1898
      Try ebay or gumtree
For particularly good examples there are facebook collectors pages

Hi, hoping you can help narrow down the year of a Milner 212 serial number 120820. It also has 35 stamped above the top hinge. Thanks

    • Alan Morgan on August 13, 2025 at 9:08 pm

      Around 1871

  16. Andrew on August 30, 2025 at 1:54 am

I have a Milner safe with number K.1444 and 15 next to the door hinge with possible indents next to the 15.

    Date and value?

    • Alan Morgan on August 31, 2025 at 5:31 pm

      This was made in 1899

Value, whatever you can get for it!
List 2 in the UK are scrap value. In USA they are collectors items. A Patent Jewel safe or Extra Strong or Armour plated still won’t get much insurance cover but will delay a burglar for some time. Anything with a dual or triple action lock, or reverse action lock with original keys will interest collectors. Though they probably won’t want the whole safe.
      HTH
      Alan
